khadi and village industry commission (KVIC) applied trademark for five of its most common symbols they use, to protect these symbols from misuse of meat and alcohol vendors. Khadi brand has been registered under the classes 20, 29, 33, which include items
Class 20 include mirrors, furniture, wood, reed, cork, wicker, cane, bone, horn, whalebone, amber, shell, meerschaum, mother of pearl, and other substitutes for all these materials
Class 29 include Fish, meat, poultry, preserved, frozen, dried/cooked fruits, vegetables, jellies, jams, eggs, dairy products, edible oils, and fats, meat extracts
Class 33 include alcoholic beverages, anise, aperitifs, anisette, arrack/ arak, baijiu, except beer, alcoholic beverages containing fruit, bitters, brandy, cider, cocktails, curacao, digesters, distilled beverages, alcoholic essences, alcoholic, extracts, fruit extracts, alcoholic, gin, hydromel/mead, kirsch, liqueurs, Nira, peppermint liqueurs, perry, Piquette, pre-mixed alcoholic beverages, other than beer-based, rice alcohol, rum, sake, spirits, vodka, whiskey, wine
Though khadi doesn’t show any interest in providing services in particular classes, they went ahead to register a trademark, just to avoid the unauthorized use of their brand name from the meat and alcohol vendors, as these products/ services are against the policies of KVIC.
KVIC is also fighting cases against several unauthorized users for violating khadi mark Regulations
